When Brambleroots called SPACE Design + Construction to give their South City locked hair studio a new look, we had the perfect mix of rococo elegance and modern minimalism “loc’d” in.
Clients often spend hours sitting in a chair while their loctician creates or maintains their locs. Brambleroots owner Kajzh Hamm asked SPACE design specialists for a beautiful and inspirational place where clients would spend those hours relaxing in comfort.
Located in a century-old two-story building, Brambleroots’ space is historic and storied. It also posed challenges with no straight lines for architectural builds. Our SPACE design and build teams prefabricated all of the casework, cabinetry, and ceiling panels in our shop, then installed them to create beautifully clean lines and square angles that draw the eye to Hamm’s chair, the focal point of artistic expression in the space.
SPACE’s casework for Brambleroots was recognized by the American Institute of Architects with the Craftsmanship Award in 2021.

Artistically Curated
SPACE interior design specialists curated the studio decor with an intersection of traditional fine art themes that center the contemporary Black experience. Brambleroots’ owner’s vision prioritized influencing a culture of empowerment, inspiration, and self-actualization through the artistry of entrepreneurs of color within the beauty industry. We wanted to subtly reflect those themes through a beautiful and functional space.

It’s All in the Details
For an overall feel that’s upscale yet familar, SPACE design experts started with Baltic birch plywood on the ceilings and casework to contrast elegantly with dark, opulent fabric details.
The hairstyling space incorporates a built-in television on a telescoping arm for both consultations and entertainment during marathon styling sessions. Open shelving showcases products and keeps the space airy.
