Bartolino’s the Hill
2103 Sulphur Ave,
St. Louis, MO 63139
The Hill in St. Louis represents everything we love about Italian-American history, so SPACE Design + Construction jumped at the chance to renovate one of the neighborhood’s classic restaurants: Barolino’s the Hill. While the sauce might be slow-cooked in the Bartolino’s kitchen, there was nothing slow about this tightly-scheduled job.
Barolino’s needed a fast turn-around. Specifically, they had an eight-week renovation in mind. We helped the Saracino family re-envision their 2006 restaurant into an updated, more contemporary space. Our process was a perfect fit for this renovation. Aside from some minor moves that included expanding the server station and moving the host stand, we kept all existing walls and brought in our interior design team for new furniture, finishes, and lighting. This kept the schedule and budget on track for the clients.
Bartolino’s the Hill was a full-team effort from SPACE Design + Construction with multiple teams working together to determine an accurate schedule and budget in the early stages of renovation so the restaurateurs could plan their grand re-opening.
Make sure you visit Bartolino’s on the Hill along with their outposts in South St. Louis County and Twin Oaks.

Dining in Comfort & Style on the Hill
The soft seating SPACE Design + Construction added to Bartolino’s the Hill was custom-made for the client. Chairs and barstools were carefully selected for comfort of all guests to enjoy the modern, upscale environment. Tabletops fabricated to match the new bar top created a cohesive look throughout the space that harkens to the style of Italy with American comfort in mind.
Furnishings and Functionality
We kept the existing heavy wall texture to conserve time and budget, but elevated the palette to warm neutrals with white oak paneling, brass accents, and walnut furniture. The new look relies on rich textures to create understated, timeless elegance.
To contrast the lightness of the dining room, we fashioned the bar area with black marble, dark walls, and a herringbone-patterned floor. The look presents a boldness without being ostentatious, keeping with the sophistication of the dining room.
To bring the outdoors in, we opened an exterior wall in the bar with large sliding doors, connecting to the existing patio for an Italian-inspired al fresco experience.
Elevating the Experience
Visually, the Bartolio’s revision makes it nearly unrecognizable from the original. With its new-found casual elegance and warm comfort, it’s a natural match for the classic food and wine St. Louisans have come to love. While the renovation was fast, the atmosphere at Bartolino’s encourages diners to linger awhile in their beautiful space.
